you would have to answer this one yourself, meaning that if you run in a heavy eelgrass area or your inland waterways are loaded with plantlife certain times a year...
Most weeds/plant life get turned into coleslaw when going the thru the pump, you would have had to go thru a bed of grass to really jamb up those large 3/4 hoses.
Speaking from experience, the groco strainer is a good piece when running an IC.
Before I installed one, the bay was loaded with eel grass, sometimes you just run into a heavily covered area and whoops the high temp alarm went off, and it is a huge PITA to clean out...
after that day, I avoided Barnegat bay like the plague during those times.
Even running on the river I could see small sand and silt particles in the strainer cup, but nothing to really cause concern IMHO...
also to consider with installing the strainer you have more places for water leaks, I`m not sold on plastic fittings, plastic housing, and an O ring to seal. this creates more places for water to leak. so installed properly with thread sealing paste (not teflon tape), proper good full flow fittings, good SS hose clamps, you should be good to go, with frequent checks, just like looking over anything else on your machine.
There will be some that argue they`ve had no issues with the plastic fittings, but to each his own...
also: what if your cleaning the strainer and you crack the plastic cup, or fudge the O ring seal??? then your beat while out on the water or at the dock, unless you have a spare set-up in your storage compartment...
these are just some of the things to think about...
Just my opinion, your machine is non IC stock, I woulnd`t bother unless your riding area is inundated with leaves, pine needs, eelgrass etc...
it`s your call! hope this helped you...
the key to longevity is maintenance! keep the inside and outside of the ski clean, read up on your owners manual and get to know the ski. Talk to it frequently and she will treat you nice!...lol...
If you are mechanically inclined, then you could save yourself some money by doing your own oil changes, plug changes, etc, etc... enjoy and good luck!
