06 GTX SC locked up.

My buddy just brought over his GTX today after telling me that it "blew up" while riding it on the lake sunday. He bought it this year with 6 hrs and we rebuilt the SC with riva washers right away. Been running sweet ever since. That is till yesterday.

I wasn't with him when it went, but he said it just quit after doing 30 mph and wouldn't turn over at all. I verified that it's locked up today in my driveway. Basically you crank the engine long enough for something to just go "DUNK". Then nothing. Pulled the spark plugs and same thing. Fresh battery, and i looked it over very well and can't see anything obvious it's a very clean ski.

We have a buddy that is a seadoo mechanic at the local shop here and he says it's screwed as well. I'm sure he knows what he's talking about and i don't doubt his expertise, but there's no second opinion around here. Do 4-tecs just shyt the bed?

Has anyone out there heard of something like this happening before? My buddy is going to order a new engine from SBT next week based off the seadoo mechanics recommendations. How difficult is this engine change with a manual and two very mechanically inclined people and what special tools are required?

Any advice would be very much appreciated. Thanks

Re: 06 GTX SC locked up.

All engines can shyt the bed......however, 1st make sure that it is the engine, and not the pump that is locked up. Pull the pump, and if it still goes "dunk" then you have ruled out the pump....

take rocker cover off and see if the timing chain is still connected (after checking pump)

Re: 06 GTX SC locked up.

Had a bad feeling it was the SC so we pulled it and found that the bearings shelled out. The bearings went, jammed the SC stopping everything from rotating. We didn't find any big metal chunks in the intake just a aluminum dust. Check the pics.......shyts crazy.

Re: 06 GTX SC locked up.

that s/c is about ready for the rubbish bin go to greenhulk.com and see if anyone is selling a stock replacement unit it will be cheaper as the housings will be damaged an the wheel is toast.

no offence but the s/c is a fragile unit and needs to be worked on by someone who knows what to do and what special tools to use, spinning at over 40,000 rpm the slightest damage to the shaft or bearings and they will self destruct, but when done correctly are reliable.
just make sure you get the right s/c unit as the 185 hp has a different size gear than the 215/255 but otherwise are interchangeable

Re: 06 GTX SC locked up.

I might recommend you also count the parts including the bearings. Ask Jason or Brian but I believe there is a Seadoo caution about the number of needle bearings in the race blah blah. I would not restart that engine until I accounted for every whole piece of that s.c. and if any of it's missing......... Just a thought....

Re: 06 GTX SC locked up.

there are 40 needle rollers in the gear but they only end up in the motor if the gear breaks apart where as his is intact, however make sure there are no steel balls missing from the s/c bearings (may just be broken cages but better check as the balls will mess up the stator or oil pump.

Good call T2000

Re: 06 GTX SC locked up.

I seem to have a similar problem with 2006 gtx 215 ( ijust postedthis morning) what are you refering to when you say sc? Could this possibly cause metel in the oil filter and the oil light to come on.
