vx 110 air filter

hello
i just bought yesterday two 2008 vx 110 and the owner was proud to tell me he remove the air filter to gain power and speed, i doubt it...
where can buy new air filters beside yamaha dealers, the retail price is $107.00 ea?
any aftermarker source? the yamaha part # is 6d3-14451-00-00. can i run the ski without the air filter? i am concern about running too lean, these engines are already working with the plugs pretty whites.

Re: vx 110 air filter

Whats funny....
if by chance something ( whatever it may be ) does actually get sucked into the intake and blow your motor, you guys would be the first to reinstall the stock air filter then go crying to the dealer about your blown engine, wanting Yamaha to pay for it.---say it aint so.....
( aftermarket replacement filters are cheap enough--- do it right )
just my .02

Re: vx 110 air filter

I do not think my outboard engine has an air filter on it.

But outboards and inboards are not the same animal. Crap tends to get into your bilge. No matter how clean the bilge is - something is in there. And that something can get sucked in. Also, I believe the fir filter helps to keep water out of the air intake by adding a physical barrier.

Depending on where you ride, there can be as much dust in the air as on land. Even here in South Florida where I ride in the big ocean - sand from Africa gets blown in. Across many miles of open Atlantic Ocean.

I doubt that you will notice much "performance gain" by removing the air filter. I plan on leaving mine in place. As for the cost of a replacement - boating is not a cheap past time. $100 for an air filter every season or two is just part of the game. Just add that cost in to all the other costs associated with going out (gas, oil, cleaning supplies, trailer maintenance, parts, accessories, ice, food, drinks, and so on). You will find that the air filter is actually a minor expense

Re: vx 110 air filter

Taking off the air filters gives your boat maximum air flow, giving it the most performance possible. Though, I would never run one like that. Air filters and flame arrestors do NOT keep water out, only dust and other small materials. Fitted jackets/sleeves/covers that are specific for your air filter/flame arrestor will keep most splash out of your motor. No part will ever keep all of the water out completely.
