But outboards and inboards are not the same animal. Crap tends to get into your bilge. No matter how clean the bilge is - something is in there. And that something can get sucked in. Also, I believe the fir filter helps to keep water out of the air intake by adding a physical barrier.
Depending on where you ride, there can be as much dust in the air as on land. Even here in South Florida where I ride in the big ocean - sand from Africa gets blown in. Across many miles of open Atlantic Ocean.
I doubt that you will notice much "performance gain" by removing the air filter. I plan on leaving mine in place. As for the cost of a replacement - boating is not a cheap past time. $100 for an air filter every season or two is just part of the game. Just add that cost in to all the other costs associated with going out (gas, oil, cleaning supplies, trailer maintenance, parts, accessories, ice, food, drinks, and so on). You will find that the air filter is actually a minor expense |
