Temperature light coming on?

Yesterday while riding my 03 fx the temperature light came on and the ski slowed down. I have 275 hours on the ski, but this has never happened before. I do all my own preventive maintenace myself. When i got home i noticed a lot of black residue inside the hull of the ski. This had happened once before when a large piece of black foam from under the engine came loose. More importantly, the oil was below L on the dip stick and there is oil all over the top of the engine where the back fire spark arrestors sit. The bolts below the spark arrestors where full of oil. So where do i start? I would appreciate any help. Thanks for reading my thread...

Re: Temperature light coming on?

Your oil filter have a pin hole in it due to rust? Loosing oil pressure and running hot?
Remove it, look at it and if it's rusty, that's probably it.
Hope that engine is ok.

Re: Temperature light coming on?

I agree with cleaning up the mess then adding oil to the appropriate level.

Run it on the hose and see where it's coming from.

Spaying like it is shouldn't be to hard to see. Hopefully it'll be the filter or something else easy to fix.

Re: Temperature light coming on?

Not the filter. That was the first thing i checked. I had one rust through last year . Seems to be something higher up on the engine. I will clean up and run this weekend to see. The season is just about over here in Mississippi anyway, so I have all winter. Thanks for the suggestions...

Re: Temperature light coming on?

After an initial exam running on the hose i can see small bubbles coming from this seal on the intake. My question is can oil be coming from this spot? It seems to be in the area of the fine oil spray, but the entire top where the stacks attach is covered with oil. Picture below

No, I don't think so. Take a look at yamaha's web site-parts area for this model.
Temp light come on or is it the oil light.
Oil in that area is from crankcase breather system or a lubricant spray somebody put on to avoid corrosion on the throttlebodies.
Bubbles from vibration of parts while running?
That oil in bilge mostly water? Oil left over from leak last time?
Yesterday I worked on an FXHO that had sea grass mulched up and clogging both pee lines!
Good luck
Still hot and steamy here.
