Oil vacuum - which one to get?

Oil vacuum - which one to get? Best deal? Funny thing today, I went to my local Yamaha shop to buy a filter and oil, and the guy brings 2 stroke oil to the counter

"Oil vacuum - which one to get? Best deal?" I reckon I got a great deal. Total cost nothing. I delved into my wife's nursing bag and used a 50ml syringe and tubing from a catheter urine bag. It didn't take to long to empty my fxho and there wasn't any mess.

Can you guess where I'll be going when I need a brake back-bleeding kit for my bikes ?

Re: Oil vacuum - which one to get?

I bought a 12V pump that seemed common a few years back, and apparently sold under different names at many stores. Label long gone. It is similar in shape to those 12V air pumps but slightly smaller overall, being about 9" long, 4" wide, and perhaps 6" tall. I have used it to pump motor oil, transmission fluid, and gear oil without difficulty. Originally it had cheap clear plastic compression fitting for the plastic vacuum and drain hose connections but they did not seal completely so I replaced them with brass hose barbs and nary a drip since. Wish I could remember where I bought it, probably an auto parts store, because I recommend this type for ease of use and reliability. I think I paid about $35 but not sure -- it was not too expensive.

I also have one of those supposedly portable hand pumped vacuum cans, but it really does not work well and is more trouble than it is worth. It only halfway starts to work decently on the thinest liquids, not motor oil or higher viscosities. When I bought this unit it cost about $29, but I have seen it advertised for $49 now -- save you money on this.

Re: Oil vacuum - which one to get?

We have to do a boat plus the waverunner, so we bought this one:

It does the waverunner in about 10 seconds! But if you don't have a need to do anything else, there are smaller (read cheaper) 12V alternatives. Google "12V oil pump".

I love the MOELLER FLUID EXTRACTOR. Bought it at West Marine. About 70 bucks.

Use it for cleaning the sump after riding to keep the mildew level down.

I don't think I'll ever pull another drain plug again.

I use a LiquiVac. They have them at Lowes for $30. I think I saw them at Home Depot also.

Re: Oil vacuum - which one to get?

It holds 3 quarts. It is the small engine version. Which is plenty for a waverunner, lawnmower, pressure washer, etc. That is all I use it for. If you will also be using it for cars or something that holds more oil I would just get a nicer one.

Re: Oil vacuum - which one to get?

I changed my oil today on my Waverunner. I first went to Northern Tool and for $6.99 bought this handy Vac-Pump shown below. I then stopped at Home Depot and bought the threaded hose adapter to .25" teflon tubing for another $8 including the cost of the tubing. For less than the cost of dinner for two at Burger King I vac'd out 3.5 quarts of old oil with very little effort. The pump came with several different tubing adapters that I used to reach into a Windshield Washer Fluid bottle that fit nicely in the footwell while pumping the oil out.

All in all... it was painless and didn't spill a drop!
