| Re: Oil vacuum - which one to get? I bought a 12V pump that seemed common a few years back, and apparently sold under different names at many stores. Label long gone. It is similar in shape to those 12V air pumps but slightly smaller overall, being about 9" long, 4" wide, and perhaps 6" tall. I have used it to pump motor oil, transmission fluid, and gear oil without difficulty. Originally it had cheap clear plastic compression fitting for the plastic vacuum and drain hose connections but they did not seal completely so I replaced them with brass hose barbs and nary a drip since. Wish I could remember where I bought it, probably an auto parts store, because I recommend this type for ease of use and reliability. I think I paid about $35 but not sure -- it was not too expensive.
I also have one of those supposedly portable hand pumped vacuum cans, but it really does not work well and is more trouble than it is worth. It only halfway starts to work decently on the thinest liquids, not motor oil or higher viscosities. When I bought this unit it cost about $29, but I have seen it advertised for $49 now -- save you money on this. |
