FX 140 oil soaked air filter - oil alarm - oil consumption

I bought a 03 FX 140 knowing the filter was clogged, because I could only get it to 9000 rpm. I also noticed the previous owner carried a quart of oil around in the rear storage bucket. Well I also noticed that with the clogged air filter in place and running on the hose, if you rev the engine the oil alarm will sound and light. With air filter removed the alarm will not sound. This ski has been consuming oil all because of a clogged oil filter!!!! I can only guess this is the reason the previous owner traded in this ski due to gradual loss of performance and oil consumption....... PROBLEM = AIR FILTER. With the filter clogged I can only guess then engine is putting a heavy vacuum on the oil system while fighting for AIR. I guess I will order the riva filter. The only downsides I can find to the Riva filter, is that is a danger of sucking water into the engine if the ski gets flipped while running?

I would suggest you remain with your new factory air filter for awhile and prove to yourself that the consumption drops before considering switching to another brand and design. Everything I have read to date warns of adding too much oil or filter blockage will occur. With a little luck you may have already "fixed" the problem.

Re: FX 140 oil soaked air filter - oil alarm - oil consumption

Not to High-Jack, but this same issue happened to me this weekend. I stupidly over filled the oil and it clogged the filter and sucked all the oil out of the crank case.

Looking at the 4 flame Arrestors, I see a coating of oil that probably feeds all the way into the motor. Can I use carb cleaner to cleans the intake out while its running?
