09 FX HO starting issue 1.8l

I have about 14 hours on my ski. This has happened about 3 times to me now. When I attempt to start it, it cranks for an extended time before actually starting (over 8 seconds). This has only happened after riding, then stopping. It has not happened on the ski's initial start of the day. Most of the time, it only needs to crank for 2-3 seconds and then it fires up. What do you think? 10 hour service was done by the dealer. The issue has happened 2 times before the service and once after.

If my ski or any of my bikes had your symptoms ( a symptom which unfortunately your
servicing dealer is unlikely to be able to recreate in his shop ) my first step would be to pull the sparkplugs to check that they are not fouled and that the plugcaps/ coil wires are attaching properly.

There is the possibility that your plugs have been in there from new and never been inspected ( even at service ).

Also pulling them now, gives you a chance to coat the threads with anti-seize paste for future ease of removal.

You can't tell if plugs are fouled by looking at them (not like two stoke plugs)
I agree, replace the plugs. Their small diameter causes them to foul easily. It's a;ways the plugs causing problems on 4 stroke Yamahas
First bump the starter to pump up the fuel system. Then try starting it. This always work for me.

I took it into the shop today. I am sure i'll get it back with the dealer saying "all is okay." At that time, i'll try changing the plugs. Thanks for the feedback.

Re: 09 FX HO starting issue 1.8l

Have not heard of any issues with the plugs fouling on the 1.8 motor......they are not small diameter like previous models, but worth checking anyway.
I agree with david.......prime the fuel pump for a few seconds before starting, see if that helps.

Re: 09 FX HO starting issue 1.8l

We have two 09 FX HO Cruisers and this has happened to both. Seems to happen only after riding (eg: warmed up) and only if you shut off the engine with out idling for a small bit of time...

Re: 09 FX HO starting issue 1.8l

I recall seeing a thread on Green Hulk about a similar issue. It turned out that the throttle cable was very slightly too tight and would keep the throttle applied (thus not allowing the engine to start as Yamaha designed). This would only happen when warm for whatever reason too. They ended up backing off the throttle cable a little bit and that fixed it.

I know that the 09 model year has a drive by wire system, which doesn't use a cable, but perhaps there is something like the issue i mentioned happening to you guys skis?? Maybe the throttle is slightly open- causing the engine to crank only with no fire? Good luck.

Did you take it into the shop? I went out this past Saturday and it didn't happen at all.

Re: 09 FX HO starting issue 1.8l

No. Ours only happens on rare occasions. If we just stop cranking and wait for a few seconds it will usually start up again. Sometimes it takes twice...

It would be so hard for the dealer to reproduce so maybe until it really breaks just going to let it ride ...
