| 02 fx140 maxes just over 8k rpm (~30mph) and NOT filter issue Hey Guys,
I have a 2002 fx140 with approx 320 hard hrs on it (previous owners). It seems to be running fine, with the exception that it won't go over ~8.2k rpm (maxing out about 32 mph indicated).
I had the oil soaked filter issue once before on this ski and it exhibited similar symptoms, but have since replaced the factory filter with the power filter (and velocity stacks). I had gotten ~11.3k rpm and 50ish mph indicated after these mods, so I'm pretty sure that's not the issue. I did try running with the filter removed (for diagnostic purposes) with no improvement. I also tried changing the plugs to new ngk cr9eb's.
I am wondering what else could be wrong, and if there are other diagnostics I should perform?
Also, I'm in the market for a right hand mirror if anyone knows of one available cheap (cheapest I found new was $112 at boats.net, none used currently available on fleabay, although there was an entire hull for ~$1k!!).
Thanks |

| Re: 02 fx140 maxes just over 8k rpm (~30mph) and NOT filter issue Try holding in the "mode" button (I think) on your dash for approx. 10 seconds and if it shows a code other than 01, that can help you narrow down the problem. Good luck!

Compression test

| Re: 02 fx140 maxes just over 8k rpm (~30mph) and NOT filter issue Ok guys, ski is in the care of a buddy (far away) so I'm trying to help resolve this remotely. Compression test is not an option right now.
He did confirm that each plug has spark, and also received code "01", by holding speed and volt buttons both down. Can someone confirm that is the proper procedure? If so, I assume that means all is well based on a previous post. My searches for code(s), error code, etc didn't come up with much.
Also, I guess he took the ski out today and said it runs great, accelerates fine, shoots right up to 8k and settles there. He was wondering if possibly it was stuck in learning mode? He also has an 04 fxho with that feature.
I didn't think the 02s had that feature. Can anyone confirm, and if so, tell me how to get it out? My searches for learning and learning mode, really didn't come up with much either.
He's going to take them out again tomorrow. I asked him to disconnect the battery overnite hoping it might reset the ecu or something.
I apologize if this stuff has been covered and I just didn't find it (wrong search terms?) I'm having a rough time dealing with this not being there.
Thanks |

| Re: 02 fx140 maxes just over 8k rpm (~30mph) and NOT filter issue when there is no default code it is not easy to track the problem, the easyest way is to have the same ski and start to swap parts.
i had the same kind of problem on one of my vx 110 not going over 6k rpm, 35mph/hour with no default code and running fine on all 4 cylinders, good all even compressions.
the ski was going faster 3/4 throttle than full throttle.
first replaced spark plugs, ecu, tps, air intake sensor , throttle boddy with no result, and finally tried a complete fuel ram and miracle, the ski worked great.
what could be wrong in the 4 injectors?
i plugged each injector on a 12v battery to open them up ,spraid carburator cleaner in the tip and blew air backward to try to clean them up.
the result was impressive, you could see the difference when you look on the fuel ram end,(the top side) where the fuel goes in, there is a little screen - filter that was black, after cleaning is was tan color again.
i did all of them, put them back on the ski and now the ski works fine again, 50mph+
there is no fuel filter in these machines, nothing to stop the crap going into the injectors.
excuse my "frenglish"

| Re: 02 fx140 maxes just over 8k rpm (~30mph) and NOT filter issue Hey Frenchy (and others),
This was a great suggestion. I finally got around to pulling the injectors this weekend and they were quite dirty. I cleaned them, and would like to reinstall, but the orange colored o-ring on fuel rail side of the injector (NOT the wider black o-ring on the block side) is pretty beat up. I also notice it says in the service manual to replace it.
Were you able to find a replacement? Only the black o-ring is called out in the exploded view as part # 90430-09002-00. No mention is made of the other o-ring, I assume because its part of the injector assembly. Riva said they didn't have it, couldn't get it, and there's no way I'm buying new injectors to get the o-ring.
I know autoparts stores sell replacement o-rings, http://www.jcwhitney.com/fuel-inject.../p2018662.jcwx
I would just need to identify which, if any, vehicle uses the same size.
Any insight? |

| Re: 02 fx140 maxes just over 8k rpm (~30mph) and NOT filter issue For whatever reason, starting in '04 Yamaha does call out the part # for this o-ring in the exploded diagram and it's 60E-14147-00-00.
Even though the injector part # differs by one digit for '04 (60E-13761-10-0 v. (60E-13761-00-00) I believed the injector, fuel rail, etc were actually the same.
I ordered the o-rings, and they were correct. Why Yamaha wouldn't call them out on the '02/03, but would on 04+, when the service manual clearly specifies them as non reusable is a mystery to me.
Regardless, they are installed, not leaking, and more importantly the injector cleaning made a huge difference. Thank you Frenchy for the excellent suggestion. |
