winterize comments

Below is what I performed on my 2008 STX-15. I did alot of research and this is what I came up with. My main focus is to avoid any HUGE mistakes.

If any of the experts can comment on my procedure, I would really appreciate it.

1. fuel stabilizer. My last run of the year on the water was about 30 minutes with fuel stabilizer.
2. i purchased 2 , 1 gallon jugs of RV antifreeze. Once the jetski was out of the water i started it and simultaneously poured, via a larger funnel, the 2 jugs into the machine where the water hook-up is. each jug took about 20-30 seconds to pour in the machine. i could see the antifreeze come out the rear.
3. i spun out each spark plug, sprayed for about 10 seconds fogging oil into the spark plug hole , spun the plugs back in and turned over the machine for a second or two. smoke came out the back.

Thats it!

Re: winterize comments

one more thing, as you can read in other post in regular section, pull those spark plugs again and put never seize on the treads and then torque to 22 lbs. Getting those stuck in the head or breaking on next change can be costly. A dab ll do ya!! Please do this now. Also what I do with my Ultra 250 is add some marine grease on plug wire seals to help keep oxygen out of there, which is main trigger for rust.

Also good job on write up sooo informing

Thanks Hilomikey

sounds good. I never torque the plugs tight becuase I am so afraid of not getting the plugs out. If anything, I may be guilty of not tightening them enough, which potentially may have terrible ramifications as well.

Re: winterize comments

There are some lengthy posts on this subject under the regular Kawi heading. Hopefully, someone will search them out and post links on this 4 stroke thread.

I think that salt water and fresh water guys have a few different things to do.

I add the Stabil at the gas station when I fill up the tank. Then the motion of trailering back to storage does the mixing for me.

I use a jug, and a hose to run the anti freeze in. Still, the pisser line doesn't really give anything out. Need more pressure/higher flow rate. Also, after I am out of fluid, I tip the nose of my pwc up in the air as much as possible.

I then let it all cool down.

Then take out the plugs. Fogging spray, bump it, fog again, then re-install the plugs (btw, you use more than 22 lbs of tourque shuffling cards) then spray the plug holes with WD40, before re-installing the plug boots.

I spray the interior with CRC anti-Corosion. Liberally !

Leave cracks for air to circulate.

If outdoors, use sponges or cloths to stop critters from setting up a residence. Still laugh at a buddy of mine starting his SJ, and shooting a critter down his driveway....

Re: winterize comments

More excellent thoughts.
Thanks

One comment - shouldnt the machine run a little after the Stabil is added so that the Stabil gets into the engine (carbs and stuff) where some gas might be sitting. Or does the machine run long enough to get the Stabil in the engine during the anti freeze and plug procedures?

Re: winterize comments

-I would definitely want to run stabil-ized gas through the motor

-I fog the cylinders, then turn the motor over for a few seconds with the plugs removed. But before I do this I disconnect the ignition coil wires (per the service manual instructions)

-I store indoors in a heated garage, so I don't have to mess around with anti-freeze. The funny thing is the SM doesn't say anything about anti-freeze, I've often wondered if it is necessary (but admittedly it would be scary to skip it if storing in freezing temps!)

Hiperco

What is the difference between turning the motor over, with plugs removed vs with plugs in?

Re: winterize comments

If you want to coat the cylinders, you need to move the pistons. The "bump" is a nano second. Then spray again. If you have the plugs in you have to remove them again. Or, if you let them fire, you have burned off the fogging oil. I've never bothered to disconnect the "coil", just place boots in a towel, and fold it over. "But, don't do this at home..."

The time it takes to run the anti-freeze in, is sufficent to bring the stabil mixed gas to the injectors.

As it is impossible to get every bit of water out, I use the anti-freeze. You get a lot more out by tipping the nose up. But, even if you go thru 3 dry run - heat/cool cycles, you will still be spitting a tad of water. Would probably need to have the nose up at 90 degree angle to let it all out.
