Stx 12 f

Hey everyone we own 06 stx 12f and a 15f both really great. when the 12 hit 25 hours after the service was done it started to burn oil real bad the dealreship said may they over filled it but turns the #2 piston broke the skirt between the compression ring and the oil ring. it was under warante so they fixed it with no problem.. now it has 77 hrs and is doing the same thing. called dealership they said they would look at it but no garantee kawasaki would pay for it again! Has anyone had this problem, if i take the airbox drain plug out oil pours out. man this ski is babied buy the women my 15f is the one we beat on and that ski is flawless.. thanks I hope that i can return the favor some day and help someone else out ..

Thanks in advance.

Re: Stx 12 f

I don't recall a previous post about oil in the air box.

Your post about the piston is a first as well.

What I will offer, is that it seems the 12F's report more problems than the 15F's do. I'm only guessing, but I speculate that this is due to higher "reving", trying to "keep up" with faster pwc's.

Keep us informed !

Re: Stx 12 f

I have a friend who just went through this with his 12f. Dealer said the roll pin that locates the crank timing wheel was getting bent at the factory when getting impacted on. That's kinda hard to believe because it's a pretty thick pin. They also changed the ECU, which makes more sense that the stock timing was too much with 11.2:1 compression and 87 octane fuel.

Re: Stx 12 f

I had the same problem and kawisaki replaced the same parts late last june. So far so good, it is running strong. Mine happened last year and Kawasaki was contacted and THEY recommended the ECU replacement which tells me there is an ECU issue. They replaced it at no charge. I can tell you the extended warranty saved my arse.

> First thing is to check the compression on each hole - must be 225+ psi. I bet either #1 or #4 hole would show low compression.
> Not only the skirt, but look at the top edge of the piston for errosion which is the sign of the detonation.
> 15F is not just a bored version of the 12F. The 15F piston feels like a heavy solid rock and 12F piston feels like plastic when you hold those pistons in each of your hand and compare.
> Oil is ending up in the air box because the oil catch bottle is full. The broken piston is letting in oil into the combustion chamber and it is escaping into the head area where the clean air reed valve hose is connected from there to the catch bottle.
> Stop running the ski immediately in order to prevent further damage by broken piston debris that is flying all over the place.

Actually it's the not the pin that gets damaged/bent. But it is the timing rotor slot where the pin goes in that gets dented. But that's not really causing this problem. Even with a timing rotor with heavily dented slot, it only advances ignition timinng only about 3~4 degreee more.
