2004 STX 1200F- Not running

Greatings from Okinawa Japan,

I have a 2004 STX 1200 that when strarted both on the hose and in water will only stay running aproximatly 5-10 minutes, then dies out (like it's not getting gas. It will start back up after waiting 10-15 minutes but then will cut die again after a few minutes running. The few minutes it is running it excelerates normal. Any help would be greatly apreciated.

Sounds like you might have water in your fuel tank. Check your fuel filler neck to make sure it's not cracked from tightening the cap too much.

Re: 2004 STX 1200F- Not running

Thanks for the reply. Here is an update from the previous post.

I took the ski to one of the local shops here in Okinawa and they checked it over and came to the conclusion that it had water in the system. They drained and cleaned the tank and serviced the fuel injectors. Also ran test on everything and test rode it with no problems.

Next day I pick it up and take it out to the water and starts right up. Start out the jetti 10 minutes later dies out and will not start. Wait about 30 minutes and starts up for about 5 mintutes then dies out and will not start back up. Take it home and after about 3 hours starts up on the hose run for about 15 minutes no problem.

Take it back to the shop and they check everything out again and take it for another test ride and discover no problem.

Pick it up this past Thursday and take it out. Runs great for over four hours.

Saturday take it out again ride for about three hours start and stop down the coast, and stop to snorkle for about 30 minutes, get back on starts right up, and after 5 minutes dies just like before. Tow back to the ramp about 3 hours still will not start. I then take it to the mech because it is not starting at all now. Get there (been about 5-6 hours) and he tries and it starts right up dead battery and all.

They are going to test ride it again today?

Not that you have the same problem. But, I had a couple of similar incidents. Connections from the battery cables to the electronics were loose. Not at the battery end, at the other end of the battery cables.

Posted this for others before, and it was the solution on a few occassion.

I will check that out. Thanks for the help. The shops here only speak Japanese so when you try to describe a problem that can't be duplicated, things get a little confusing.

What's the compression on each hole?
Next time when the engine doesn't start in the same condition, immediately remove spark plugs and carefully inspect them for any residue. And carry extra plugs and see if new plugs would help restarting in that situation NOT after you bring the ski back to land.

Re: 2004 STX 1200F- Not running

All,

Thanks for all the suggestions. Picked ski up yesterday and looks like the problem was a bad fuel pump relay. Ran on the water hose and no issues yet. Was planning on taking it out today, but now have an issue with other ski (05 STX 12F) It will start up and after about 30 seconds the batt alarm goes off. Battery is charged and all concetions are tight. Now I have to trouble shoot the elec system.

Again thanks for all the helpfull suggestions for my ski, I will keep posted after I get it on the water and make sure the relay was the problem.

Get there (been about 5-6 hours) and he tries and it starts right up dead battery and all.

Well, if he connected the battery charger and did not disconnect the battery, then he may have blown the voltage regulator.
Simple check is measure the battery voltage.

Start the ski and the measure the voltage at the battery terminals, should be 13.5V or higher. If its 12.5V or lower, then the regulator is gone. If it was the mechanic that connected the battery charger, he owes you a new regulator.

Darnice,

It was the regulator, but not from charging while battery was connected. This was a new battery that only had the initial charge out of the ski. Thanks for help. Crossing my fingers that I can get both ski's out this week withou issue.
