15F - Difficulty starting warm

Saw something new this weekend. We idled the 15F into the marina to load up with gas/ice. After 20 minutes or so, it wouldn't restart.

Tried turning it over about five times. Once almost 15 seconds. Just spun without catching...

So after 15 minutes of waiting we tried it again. Same problem.

Towed it back upriver about 15 miles behind my cruiser (tow taps off - of course...) and then tried again. Started in about 2 seconds.

Hasn't given us a problem since...

Any ideas? Seemed almost like vapor lock - which seems a bit crazy for modern EFI engines...

Re: 15F - Difficulty starting warm

I have a 08 15f with about 3 hours on it. Same thing happened. It woudl crank as but would not catch. Battery was fine. Took it to a kawi dealer, they just lifted the stop button a bit more, even more than the lanyard clip lifts it and it started right up. Told me to use a thicker lanyard clip. I did....

2 weeks later that solution stopped working as well. Dealer has a now switch on order for me, hopefully that will be the end of it.

I agree, I post back in my threads even when no one else answered my question.

Re: 15F - Difficulty starting warm

UPDATE: So i took it in. They swapped the start/stop switch and same problems. Sometimes it would just crank and crank. Sometimes it would crank and catch and start right away. They even swapped it with a new ECU from a ski just cut from the crate, and still the same problem. Will be taking it in for full workup when they have room in a week or two. I am very frunstrated. A ski with 3 hours on it, still brand new, and this is a serious issue.

Re: 15F - Difficulty starting warm

A couple of mates and I bought 3 2008 15F's and all of them had the same problem your describing and it turned out to be the temp sender in the exhaust in all of them.
They would run fine fro cold but once they'de been run and turned off you could literally crank them till you flattened the battery and no way would they fire.
Then you let it cool down for an hour or two and presto instant ignition when you bumped the starter.
Apparently there are some that have a fault, the dealer replaced them under warranty and problem solved
Cheers

Re: 15F - Difficulty starting warm

Thanks craigs, I have had this problem and have seen it a few times with others. My problem seems to be getting worse so I will change out the sensor and hopefully it will fix it. This has been a problem with 15 f's for a while now.

Re: 15F - Difficulty starting warm

Theory here is that when engine is hot or warm after running for a while, the temp sensor on the exh pipe is sending a signal in terms of voltage (input=5V from ECU, and output=depends on temp) back to the ECU. Supposedly, the faulty temp sensor is sending a bogus (just slightly that's why it is so intermittent) signal, and ECU can't provide correct fuel/air ratio to start the engine - and f/a ratio is most critical when starting the engine. However, when engine is cold, the temp sensor is working correctly and this problem never happen when cold. Just a theory...

Re: 15F - Difficulty starting warm

I have a 90 Kawi 650TS. started fine the other day.. Had it shut off for about 10 minutes to tighten the band clamps on the exhaust ( to keep it from leaking). It will turn over, but will not fire. Checked plugs and they spark, fuel is going to the carb from the bulb and primer. Even tried starter fluid and still will not fire. Any ideas?

Re: 15F - Difficulty starting warm

It's been at the dealer for a freakin month already. Still not done. I am gonna kill myself. Not only have I not used my 3 hour old kawi ski for a month, but it sits in their outside lot. Not my nice closed garage.
