Who wants to turn some wrenches?!

Well, I FINALLY started the swap last night! I got the SJ in the garage and started the 650 to 701 swap. I pulled the 650 and got the inside of the hull cleaned and ready to go. My hands still reek of bleach! Tonight I am cleaning up the shell of the girdled head and hopefully getting it polished out. Bill is going to be pulling apart the pump section today so that I can drill/tap the pump for the new dual cooling set up. Hopefully if all goes well, I will be dropping in the engine by Thursday night. Friday I will get the remainder of the parts bolted up. And Saturday I will be hooking up the miles of fuel, cooling, and water injection lines not to mention the electrical for it all. I am remaining hopefully optimistic that by Saturday or Sunday I can take it down to the park to fire up for the first time and start doing some tuning on the trailer. So as you can see, I have a LOT of work in front of me! So if anyone wants to venture over to the NW side of Indy to turn some wrenches, you're always more than welcome! I'll be taking some pics of the build along the way and posting them up at a later date.

Would love to help ya Mikey, but I'm not much of a mechanic yet. I hate practicing on someone elses machine obviously.

Re: Who wants to turn some wrenches?!

Yeah...Never use a stud blot installer on a pwc engine! I rented one from Auto Zone and ended up ruining some threads on one of my girdle head bolts! I spent the rest of the night trying to locate the right sized metric die to fix them! Long story short...it took me 6 hours to install one stud into my engine block! I'm just going to stick with using two nuts tightened together to install the rest!

Locktite those bolts if you are doing what I think you are doing. I'm putting new bearing buddies on my single trailer and a few other projects tonight. So when are you planning to hit the water?

Re: Who wants to turn some wrenches?!

Well, I cleaned the studs and the nuts. I was able to turn the studs in all of the way by hand. I got the girdle head mounted tonight. So....I started working on the exhaust manifold. THAT is where the cussing and wrench throwing took place!!! I had to enlarge the holes on the exhaust manifold to fit the bolts. Why? I have no idea! I think the manifold was meant for a 61X which uses a smaller bolt. 8mm I think. The 62T uses a 10mm. But because I bought exhaust manifold bolts at Lowe's. The bolt heads are also larger than that of Yamaha's which has presented a whole other problem trying to get them tightened in a VERY cramped space. More cutting and grinding will ensue! I need to make ANOTHER trip to Harbor Freight to buy some specialty wrenches to get them tightened. GRRRR!!!!!! This engine is kickin my @ss!!!

Let me translate for those who don't know Mikey. Mikey is a great mechanic, and a penny pincher. Mikey has a tendency to buy parts that are close, or fabs his own. 9 times out of ten, through no fault of his own setbacks occur and usually the cost to him is the same price as a new part. Mikey, I really would like to come over and video tape this install for you tube.

Thats pretty much the story on my entire Jeep LOL

Mikey how far are you from Noblesville? I get home tomorrow from school for the summer tomorrow and while I'm not quite an experienced PWC mechanic yet, I know my way around a wrench or two and I take direction well lol. If you aren't too far from me, I wouldn't mind helping you out this weekend if there is in fact anything I can help with. I need to meet some of the other members anyway, I've only met Dave and his girlfriend so far.

Re: Who wants to turn some wrenches?!

I am about 20-25 from Noblesville. I work up in Westfield. I got the motor in tonight. I looks GREAT! But looking great and running great are two different things! I have no spark at this point. I am going to be doing some searching on here to figure out how to test my stator. I also need to see if I need to connect my overheat sensor wires since I am no longer using it. I figured that they needed to be disconnected since the sensor had no continuity while cool. (thinking that it completes the circuit when it overheats thus sending a ground signal to the cdi to put the engine in safe mode) If nothing else, I will use the stator and flywheel out of my 650 for memorial day weekend. I was hoping to be able to tune the engine on the trailer in the water on Sunday, but I don't think that will happen now.
