Lake Monroe Drowning.

This is why we wear our life vests....

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- A man died Saturday afternoon after he fell off a boat in Lake Monroe, the Department of Natural Resources said. Hoover Settle Jr., 54, of New Palestine, and his wife were enjoying the afternoon on the lake when he fell off the boat and began yelling for help. Settle's wife was not able to pull him back into the boat. James Berry, of Indianapolis, was fishing nearby and heard Settle's cries for help. Berry jumped into the water and was able to pull Settle to shore, but he had been under water for several minutes. Several people began administering CPR to Settle at the Paynetown State Recreation Area Campground before medics arrived. Hoover was taken to Bloomington Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Conservation Officer David Reese said Settle was not wearing a life jacket.

Re: Lake Monroe Drowning.

Like a bad dream , I have seen this soooo many times. I was on the volunteer fire dept. for several years. So many people slip under and drown , if only they had a vest on. I know my vest has saved me more than once. I am a great swimmer also , but there are times when you need them.

Re: Lake Monroe Drowning.

When I had my boat my friends thought I was lame, but before every cruise I showed everyone aboard where the throwable was stored.

Re: Lake Monroe Drowning.

I have a different vest for "boating" than the one I use for "jetskiing". Not as snug.

But I always wear a vest - jet ski OR boat.

Re: Lake Monroe Drowning.

It happens almost every year on Monroe. There are a lot of cabin cruisers, and since it's a bigger lake it can get some decent waves on it. Last year when Hurricane249 were there for 4th of July a 5-7 year old kid drowned at the beach. He didn't know how to swim, and his parents didn't make him wear a life jacket. Nothing pisses me off faster then when parents don't have vest on their kids because "They are only wading". It only takes one good wave to knock them off their feet and get them in trouble.

Re: Lake Monroe Drowning.

It kills me how people always respond with "I'm a great swimmer". (actually, it kills THEM...)

I consider myself an advanced swimmer. I once swam over ten miles. I could probably swim in my sleep.

but I can't seem to get it right when I'm unconscious.

If you are in the water unintentionally, the chance is good you have hit your head on something on the way down.

I only gamble when there is something to WIN.

The cold water doesn't help, even if you are a skilled swimmer.

Exactly! I was on a swim team growing up, was a lifeguard in high school, and taught swim lessons as well. Unless I'm diving I wear a jacket anytime I'm in the water. I don't wear one on a boat, well depending on type of boat, but always have my hand on one.

It seems like when someone drowns the news travels fast all over the lake, regardless of size. Also seems like it always gets cloudy when it happens.
