| Lake Monore Water Usage! Need your help! I am requesting that those of us that are at Lake Monroe Thursday of next week attend the hearing if it fits within time constraints. This would have a huge effect on the lake level when it is already stressed during times of drought. This would be when they need the water the most. It seems to me that IPL should buy up land and build their own cooling pond instead of causing un-natural flucuations in the River level and loss of recreation tax dollar revenue. IPL has had a contract for 20 years over this, and has never excercised it's usage rights. This does concern me after the conditon of reservoirs in Georgia and Tennessee during last years drought. Utility Wants Up To 23 Million Gallons Of Lake Water Daily IPL's Lake Monroe Request Under Review
POSTED: 12:19 pm EDT May 12, 2009 BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indianapolis Power & Light is seeking permission to draw up to 23 million gallons of water a day from southern Indiana's Lake Monroe.
The utility's request is a contingency plan in case it needs extra water to cool its generating plant near Petersburg. Indiana DNR spokeswoman Monique Riggs said that if the contract is approved, IPL could request the release of water from the lake, which would follow the White River to the plant in Pike County. The contract would not allow the water be used for other purposes, such as drinking.
The DNR will have a public hearing on the request on May 21 at the Monroe County Courthouse.
