Engines

Just wanted to put a post out there about engines. If you buy an engine...I would certainly before you pay for it, ask to have them yank off the cylinder to see what the slugs and cylinder walls look like. I seen some shocking stuff last night at my house on an engine that was sold as "AWESOME" that had been seized, had internal case damage etc. This was a complete bummer for the buyer and a waste of his time and efforts. It's worth the gasket to have them yank it off so you can see what your buying.

A compression test will give you a great idea.

Re: Engines

Not really...if you have rusted spots in Cylinders there will be little to no compression over that section as the surface the rings ride in will be damaged. It also will not show damaged pistons that someone just put new rings on. You can have compression numbers up top...but little or leaking on the way up.

Re: Engines

Communication from both the buyer and the seller is the most important. There are people out there that think because they can pull an engine out of a ski that they are a mechanic. I purchased an engine once from a guy that said it "ran awesome" and in reality it was about to blow because of a poor rebuild. I put the engine in my ski and used it for 2 hours and the rear cylinder came apart. Was I ever pissed! Had I asked more questions up front I would have not purchased it but it was a "Good deal" and I was blinded with the thought of bolt it in and rip.

Ask all the questions you need to make an informed decision and if they aren't answered to your liking..............keep looking.

IMHO.

Re: Engines

Well I would like to take this one step further. I'm told that Erik has had folks questioning my Creditability on the engine he bought and the condition of the engine. I think personally it's amazing that folks talk so much about stuff when often they are clueless. For folks to tell him it's fine and to run it etc....WHAT? I would like to put this out there...those who sent him info, messages etc about this engine he got and say "RUN IT"...post your name on here "don't worry we know who you are" so we have a list of folks that have no clue. Since most of you don't know me personally....I am a factory trained tech but, to go further...he's going to send the pictures to Tim Judge which we all know who this is for his officical 2 cents. I would love to see someone question his crediaiblity and let's just see what TJ has to say about this "FINE" engine.

Guys I'm not trying to get into a pissing match here with you guys but come on...if you TRULY don't know what your talking about ....STOP. Quotes as folks saying oh...that's normal...because of compression...are you serious??? I ran 195PSI in a tripple...and 210 PSI in a twin and NEVER had scuff marks...thos are LEAN seizures PERIOD. Let's be real...I can post pictures of engines that have had these....they are the same pics every time. The bottom line is the engine needs a new top end, bore, hone etc....it's not "OK". Lastly when an engine seizes up, it does not mean it won't always turn over....when it cools down and the pistons shirnk back to normal size, it will often loosen up and allow the engine to turn over. You can seize from many different reasons....some more harsh then others and this engine looks to have had a lean seizure vs a full blow lock up from lack of lubrication seizure.

So....let's get the names rolling shall we? Put on here if you think this engine is just "FINE". I know your calling, texting and emailing him....I just spoke with the guy....I seen the engine in person....so let's bring it. Tim will respond and I asked Erik to put up his response via email. Once he posts it...it's going to bring the facts out from someone that you guys "FEEL" is qualified. We could even talk to Harry at GroupK, Dan Lamey, and the list goes on and on....that engine is not normal wear and tear.

Re: Engines

Good God Mike don't you think you are taking things a bit too personally. Someone has a different opinion that you do. Big deal! Are you related to Dave by chance? He takes everything personally as well.

I would say there is a 99.9% chance that I have rebuilt more two stroke engines than you have even seen and based on the pictures and ASSUMING the crank is good, no one has said it wasn't, I would without a doubt run the engine. Based on the pics I see no evidence of a seizure and believe me I have seized a few. I raced two stroke motorcycles from the time I was six until I was 22 and have just a little bit of experience with stuck pistons. Someone mentioned there was pitting inside the cases. Again, big deal. Most engines will have after a period of years. We are talking about an engine for a Blaster not a space shuttle.

Erik I would keep the engine and see if the seller would be willing to pay for a top end if it seizes within the first month of season next year. OR see if he will pay for a top end kit if you are that concerned about. We both know you can get it bored pretty inexpensively and with a new top end you basically have a new motor.

Re: Engines

Well Hurricane...if you don't know a seized engine from one that's not...then I would say your 99.9% in need of training on engines. I'm not taking it the wrong way when you clearly misinforming folks and talking trash. You need to stop responding to information if you can't give an accurate response. The engine has been seized and stuck both cylnders...hence the need for a rebuild. I'm a Certified tech...are you? I have a certificate from MMI....how about you? You can't even tell a dam seized engine yet you race ?

The last thing I'm going to response is the response to keep it....we all don't know without taking the engine apart if it has any interal damage to the cases from the old crank? It's ran lean at some point...was this due to incorrect carb jetting/needle setting or a leaking case from damage? We all don't know until it's torn apart....I'll let Erik send it to you since you clearly know more then me and all the other TOP engine builders in the world.

Re: Engines

I'm really not man...just really get's to me when folks called Erik and told him I don't know WTF I'm talking about and the engine is good as it sits and it's not been "Seized". It's not my business and I'm not going to let this go any further on my behalf. It is what it is...the engine is damaged and needs some work.
