Sand Island

Does anyone know if we can ride out at Sand Island with the Port Royal Pain in da *** stuck on the reef? I saw the pictures on the Hon Adv and looks like it is stuck in our ride area. Planning to ride tomorrow.

Re: Sand Island

I'm pretty sure people can still ride/drive out. Just don't approach the warship! Wonder what the captain was thinking.

http://www.honoluluadvertiser.com/ap...=2009902070366

"One of the biggest and most technologically advanced warships based at Pearl Harbor ran aground in 17 to 22 feet of water half a mile off Honolulu International Airport's reef runway.

Navy tugs tried early yesterday morning to nudge the 9,600-ton, 567-foot-long guided missile cruiser USS Port Royal off the sandy and rocky bottom, but were unsuccessful, officials said.
"

I think I see the problem in the picture. It appears to have an anchor in the water...

Re: Sand Island

Went out today. We only stayed in the dredged area adjacent to the reef runway. didn't venture out to the ship but we were taking pictures of if. . We ended up cruising on the beach at the reef runway for about 30-40 minutes. Airport security eventually chased us out. No biggie as we were ready to leave anyway.

There was a hawaiian monk seal sleeping on the beach with us. Is the state law 50 yards? Anyway, we kept our distance. It was a pretty good day.

Re: Sand Island

Do you guys launch from the keehi marina ramp? I have heard that the dept of home land security (coast guard) chases guys out of the riding area since it is so close to the airport runway.

I would like to check this spot out some time. How many guys ride out there?

Re: Sand Island

I've only launched out there once, and then went straight out to sea to spearfish and check out the Moi farm. On the way back in, I did a quick run around the lagoon area to explore and see what my top speed was with a passenger, dive gear, a 25 pound kahala and a sled. 54 mph in flat water on the GPS. No issues with anybody.
