Riding Out to the Moi Cage Sunday Morning

Oahu fishers/spearos,

My buddy and I will be riding out in search of the Moi fish farm located off of the south shore of Oahu (supposedly three miles straight out from Hickham). We've heard rumors of large pegalics, sharks and omilus there. If anybody is interested in joining, we will be launching from the Keehi harbor probably at about 8 AM. Black Ford pick-up truck, white/black Yamaha FXHO with a HSA sled. We will be spearfishing, but fishers are welcome to join as long as they don't hook us!

Re: Riding Out to the Moi Cage Sunday Morning

We went to the two GPS coordinates we found on the 'net for the Moi Cage. We passed an odd looking boat on our way to the coordinates and at both coordinates, there was nothing but blue water to be found. We continued further west along the coast, diving at a few places. Nothing impressive so I didn't shoot anything.

On the way back, we decided to stop at the weird looking boat and sure enough, the moi cage was under it! Weirdest thing I've ever seen. Looks like a UFO, I kid you guys not.

Flat bottom was at about 70 ft. All the shootable fish were under that in the middle of the disc near the chain. So I had to swim down to 70 ft, swim under the cage towards the chain to get to the fish. I picked up a 20 or so pound Kahala (amberjack). There were a few more hanging around but I didn't want 'em. A shark also tried to eat mine so I decided to split.

We then went looking for baby hammerheads to take pictures of in the Keehi lagoon but it was dirty and we didn't find anything good.

Good times nevertheless.

Thanks! Will probaly wait until they get the reef killer out of the way. Was watching the tug try to pull it off of the reef today. Pretty entertaining. No progress though. My friend has set the over-under to get it off at midnight tuesday. I say over.

Re: Riding Out to the Moi Cage Sunday Morning

Ran across a picture taken that day of the moi cage. Thought I'd share.

No good fish around, but a bunch of Kahalas and a shark hanging out under it.
