Pool training at Palolo Pool. 4:00-5:00 PM (I will most likely show and start warming up at around 3:30). 2007 Palolo Ave, Honolulu, HI
Tuesday October 13
Thursday October 15
Tuesday October 20
Thursday October 22
Please post here if you can commit to these dates. We need to get a head count. I will be posting on a couple of other forums as well.
The lifeguards are very strict about not doing any underwater swimming/breath holds without a active spotter. DO NOT DO ANY WITHOUT A SPOTTER or we will all be banned from using the pool. They have been itching to get rid of us for some time now.
Equipment not allowed: Weight belts, knives, prongs or spear guns - Anything metallic/perceived as dangerous.
Bring your: Mask, snorkel, fins, wetsuit (if prone to getting cold - this pool is usually rather cool). Fin savers, dive socks are optional. Gloves not needed. A watch with chrono (timer) is quite useful.
1st day will focus on:
What to do if somebody SWBs with in-water drills.
Finding out your current benchmarks (how far you can swim underwater)
Swimming form
Seeing what kind of changes to your form improves your underwater distances/times.
2nd day will focus on:
Basics of controlling your breathing
Learning to count your kicks
Experimenting with different kick speeds and lengths
Achieving new personal records
3rd day will focus on:
advanced breathing techinques
Recovery breathing
Achieving new personal records
4th day will focus on:
Achieving new personal records
Addressing any problem areas/concerns
There may be a 5th, a 6th, etc. If so, and there's enough interest all around, then there will be some endurance/recovery swim training thrown in for good measure. I only need to know who/how many will commit to the above 4 days. If you have to miss one of the four days, miss the 4th one. Not the first three. I would prefer that somebody who has to miss one of the first three not come at all.
Because I am deaf, communication is quite a barrier in my ability to teach non-signers at an workshop like this. I hope that somebody else who is knowledgeable and can talk will join so he/she can do most of the verbal communication stuff. I'll deal with hands-on stuff, and communicate via gestures/lipreading/mouthing and via emails/PM.
This is in NO way a substitute for the PFI course which I strongly encourage everybody to take. What I do only scratches the surface of what the professionals teach in that course.

As a warning in advance, there have been SWB's and sambas that occured during this workshop in the past. If you are spotting, you MUST always be paying attention and prepared to jump in or swim to the victim and assist at immediately. If I feel that one of the students is not paying attention during his spotting duty turn, I may fake, or ask somebody to fake a SWB. If the spotter fails to react in a timely manner, don't be surprised if I either punch you, or ask you to leave. I take safety rather seriously, and don't want to be banned from using this community pool to further the knowledge and safety of the Hawaii diving community.
Now, on that nice tone, who's in?
