ramp materials

I'm planning on making a ramp here soon. I have some drums That will help with the flotation, some 2x4's and some plywood. I'm planning on making this about 6 ft. tall.

My question is, what can I use for the top? What would help the ski slide bettter than plain wood? anything thats bendable?

Re: ramp materials

I built a ramp once and for the face of the ramp I used a 4 by 8 sheet of 3/4" nylon stuff that my buddy had laying around at work and it worked great untill the ramp fell apart (dont use osb) I dont know where to find the nylon but it felt like riding on ice. Also take off you intake grate because mine broke from the impact of hitting the ramp

Re: ramp materials

Like the looks of the ramp! I plan on painting mine so it doesn't get quite as "waterlogged" as plin jane wood floating in water lol. Why did it start falling apart? Where did the drums work best for floatation, but having the front under the water a little bit still?

I'd like to start making a little playground on the water, like wakeboarders have. I want to build a long box that you can jump up onto (or ride onto) and slide offthe other end as well.

That nylon stuff looks perfect? Does it cost a lot? What else could I use if I can't find any of that stuff?

Suggestions?

Re: ramp materials

osb is the cheap wood from home depot that is made from wood chips glued together but soaks up water like a sponge after about 20 min and thats why my ramp fell apart.I dont know where to get the sheets of nyon but it would probly be expensive. You might be able to use plywood for the face of the ramp and then wax it really good to make it slick.i didnt float my ramp I just found a spot at the lake where there were 2 coves seperated by a shallow strip of water about 1ft deep and put the in the shallow

Re: ramp materials

Its my plan this summer to build of on a trailer. That way I can take it to the lake unhook it float it out, anchor it and still pull it home at the end of the weekend. and teflon sheets are ridiculously exspensive

Re: ramp materials

you could probably use the vinyl wall stuff that they put on the walls of the meat dept at the grocery store. it comes in plywood size pieces and is flexible and just tack it down with lots of glue between it and the face. and it will cost alot less that teflon. unless you got money to burn you might as well forget that idea.
