89 X2 Build Thread

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I got this ski... it is bone stock... like as in nothing has been done to it. Hits 150 on both holes starts and runs on the trailer. I've never ridden an X2 but we have a 89 650sx with a few bolt ons... I can't wait to get this one built up. Any on interested in me taking pics or is it a waste of time?

Things I'm going to do/install
Re-install coil that I had Jetski Solutions rebuild (BAD ***)
HydroTurf pads
Bilge kit/switch
Start/Stop lanyard install
pump rebuild kit
Tiny Tach
RJCS top loader intake grate (very cool will post pics)

Performance:
brand new 44sbn carb
a/f intake for 44sbn
Boyesen Dual stage reeds
15.5 Skat impeller
wet wolf free style cone

I'm going to dry out the exhaust a little per the mod I've heard... but for now I'm gunna ride it like this. Oh ya and drill out one or two holes in the waterbox, I've heard it works wonders. Hopefully everything will hold up for this summer... If it blows, it's off to GroupK

I forgot, I scored some cool vintage stickers and am willing to take more if you have them. This will add at least 15 more hp per the guys at PWCtoday.

What's the best way to get the old junk factory turf off, I'm using acetone and scraping but it's slow.

Re: 89 X2 Build Thread

Sorry been super busy and haven't updated lately...

Mods I've done to date, hull cut 1.5", 15.5 skat, wet wolf cone, RCJS intake grate, hydroturf mats, cleaned up the pump imperfections, new pump bearings, new cdi coil (JSS didn't work out). PJS start/stop with lanyard, seat strap removed... It actually has a 38mm carb instead of the 28mm with remote fuel pump... tiny tach added

Took it out Friday... What a friggin blast to ride! I love this ski, I want more brap really bad!

I was pulling 5550 rpms pretty constant, and saw 5570 a few times.

Still left to install...
44mm mikuni
Prok Air filter
boyseen dual stage reeds
after market intake
Bilge pump
Punch out holes in stock water box

Sorry, I thought I had taken more pics, I'll get some more up. I thought the ski ran pretty well for what it was worth... I can see how the fun increases with more power...

Is that Acetone the way to go or did you figure something else out to get the turf off easier?

Re: 89 X2 Build Thread

Its kinda pricey, but i always use Goof Off just let that **** soak into the turf...and once it dries a little it usually comes right off or use some heat gun and it just melts off. Sell the nice running 650 to get a 750

Re: 89 X2 Build Thread

I tried goof off and it worked great but too expensive. Then I used MEK, which is one step up from acetone, it dries very fast. Worked great on the glue. It makes it soft and can then be scraped off with your thumb nail. I tried scrapers and what not but the finger nail worked best. I was removing old hydro turf

Re: 89 X2 Build Thread

Has anyone ever tried removing grip tape like they use on skateboards? My blaster has that instead of turf. It makes it look dated and is pretty rough on the ol' knees when re-boarding.

Re: 89 X2 Build Thread

Mine came up fairly easy using about a 1 1/2 or 2in caulk/paint knife, it was slow, hardly left any scratches... the metal kind with plastic handle, I just got under the turf and kinda gently bumped it and got up as much as I could, then went back to get the rest with the putty knife... hope that made sense...

Turned out really well, I don't know if I'd go hydro turf again, with that new shark brand (cheaper). Or I would have rather done the hydroturf roll so I could have done the rails and custom stuff... but I'm hoping to have fun this season, and really prep it this winter for next season...

I'm kinda bummed I didn't think to keep the back anchor/hole point. Maybe I can fix that...

And a razor blade as seen in one of my pics, that got the real nasty stuff up without scarring anything.
